With Sympathy

I just discovered Wendy's father passed away on Friday when she called to tell me she would need a substitute for next Tuesday's match.

I'm certain many of you remember Mr. Day not only from many of the matches he would show for or end up at just having played a killer Seniors match himself, but the time he popped up at Regionals in Palm Springs and took us out after we barely won the finals against those girls from San Diego, to that quirky little spa out in the desert.

He said he was going to treat us even if we had lost. He didn't say "to what", but he pointed to a McDonald's as we drove by it. He was like that - a jokester, but always giving.

In fact, just before I got off the phone with Wendy I said, "You know this is no excuse for missing your match." She just laughed and said, "That's what dad would have said."

The funeral is at their hometown where all the family is in Phoenix and doesn't expect any of us to show.

Anita and I have already decided on a bouquet of peach roses for the funeral and they will be sent in time. Feel free to contribute what and when you can.

We are getting one of those super sized tennis balls to give to Mrs. Day with all of our signatures. We thought of simply "To a Wonderful Man". Wendy said her mother would definitely put that up in her den.

You can leave the family a message online at nathanielday.inmemoryof.com. Please include "Tennis Friend" in your signature.
